While Civil War combat sometimes is thought to be almost romantic, there was a human cost. Charles Lapham of the 1st Vermont Cavalry was grievously wounded when an artillery round passed through his horse, mangling his legs. Double amputation was performed on July 10, and he was cared for in the Boonsboro home of Nancy Stotler. He was discharged, attended college, and became a clerk in the US Treasury Department. (National Museum of Health and Medicine.)

On July 10, cavalry and infantry clashed in the fields south and east of Funkstown. Jeb Stuart established a line to protect the Confederate occupation of Hagerstown. Union forces under Gen. John Buford launched a daylong confrontation that resulted in almost 500 casualties. One of those was Tommie Metcalfe of the Phillips’ Legion of Mississippi Cavalry from Georgia. Metcalfe was mortally wounded in the head. He was buried in the Hagerstown Presbyterian Church Cemetery. (Margaret Metcalfe Hassin, descendant.)
